First-order homogenization of the wave equation in isotropic non periodic stratified media

Abstract

When simulating seismic wave propagation numerically, the computation cost often depends on the geological medium. In particular, fine scale heterogeneities lead to high numerical costs for most of the numerical methods. In order to tackle this issue, the non-periodic homogenization method allows separating the large scale and the fine scale heterogeneities in order to produce a smooth effective media in which simulations can be performed at a lower computation cost. In this context, the behavior of the free surface condition has been studied in some specific cases (Capdeville \& Marigo, 2007, 2008; Capdeville et al., 2013) and we want to expand on these results in order to apply the methodology to sedimentary basins. Specifically, the spherically symmetric case has been developed by Capdeville and Marigo (2007) based on a normal mode summation formalism. The result includes effective elastic properties and effective boundary conditions at the surface of the Earth. In the present paper, we rewrite the theory for a layered media in the cylindric frame as it is well suited to describe our media (Kennett, 1983).
