Abstract
Mechanical simulations on 3D geological models generate 3D strain and stress fields, whose visualization and interpretation can be challenging. This work propose a visualization method which segments the 3D computational mesh based on local similarity of the tensor field, then use animation to convey an intuitive sense of the deformation. The latter approach is based on a segmentation in regions of similar geomechanical behaviors, and on an animation that deforms these regions separately. This segmentation method is based on a watershed algorithm applied directly on a tetrahedralized geological model. The animation which follows is either based on an averaged tensor deemed representative of the region, either on the displacements field. As it can be applied on any kind of mechanical simulation that make use of either the finite elements, finite differences or finite volumes method, it comes within a more general interpretation of mechanical models. The merits and drawbacks of the method are also presented and discussed, and further avenues for effective 2nd second order tensor field are proposed, along with arguments to open the discussion on ways to correct and improve the method.
