Abstract
One way to assess and anticipate seismicity is to define a model that simulate seismic activity
through time, space and magnitude. The simulated seismicity needs to be i) representative of
natural seismic activity over the calibration period and ii) predictive for non-yet occurred but
plausible earthquakes especially regarding high magnitude events. Understand and characterize
past seismicity is a prerequisite to any simulation process. In this paper, we propose a statistical
analysis of historical seismicity of the French territory (mainland) referenced in seismic catalogues.
We use several databases that resume the seismic activity of the last 35 years. These data hide
uncertainties and inconsistencies that we propose to discuss in order to build a clean data set.
Then, we propose to investigate seismic spatio-temporal and magnitude organization according to
the geodynamical context. Finally, we discuss the parameters of stochastic seismic events simulation
and the expected organization of seismic activity through time, space and magnitude.
