Abstract
Groningen is the largest onshore gas field in Europe. It takes place in the North of the Nether-
lands near the city of Groningen. The field is managed since the 1960's. Within the last 30 years,
the seismicity in its region has been increasing. Some studies correlate such an increase with the gas
production, but large uncertainties remain because the recorded seismic signals are complex so that
the usual location methods meet problems to locate earthquakes. To overcome these problems, a
better account for the geological heterogeneities in ray tracing or wave simulation is required. This
can be achieved using an effective medium of the original complex model of the region. The pur-
pose of this article is to propose such an effective medium using the non-periodic homogenization
technique.
