Discrete Fracture Network Modeling : Perspectives

Abstract
This paper introduces a set of new objects and methods dedicated to fractured reservoir modeling. Two particular issues are discussed in this article : object based stochastic simulation of fractures and fracture equivalent permeability assessment. A Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) integrated into the Gocad environment is proposed. Emphasis is put on two key parameters : the numerical efficiency of the method and the geological realism of the model. The very first results of this project include a fast heterogeneous Poisson point process simulator and a method for efficiently computing and storing the DFN connectivity. However, as this project is at a very early stage of development, this article rather aims at emphisizing the potential of the DFN method and discussing the perspectives of this project.
