Abstract

In GOCAD, a 3-dimensional model is defined as a partition of the 3D space into a set of bounded regions. Each region can then be filled with any support: tetrahedra, hexahedra, wedges, ... Grids are said to be structured when their topology is implicit, i.e. when all their cells have basically the same number of faces. In the other cases, the grids are called unstructured. This paper presents a hybrid gridding algorithm: the generated grids are filled both with structured (hexahedral) and unstructured (polyhedral) cells. This method can be used to model the neighborhood of the faults in an efficient way, as the geometry of the polyhedra can easily accommodate the geometry of the faults. On the other hand, far away from the faults and in the neighborhood of wells, the cells remain structured, which guarantees faster computation times for flow simulators, as the cells keep a low number of faces and simple topological relationships.
