Well trajectory optimisation: a genetic approach using probability cube

Abstract
This paper presents an approach being investigated for well optimisation within the reservoir. This approach uses an hybrid genetic algorithm to optimise the well location, orientation and length. A data structure has been devised for that purpose. The hybrid genetic algorithm manipulates this structure instead of the usual bit-string as in standard genetic algorithm. This allows to account for drillability directly in the algorithm and no need to use repair heuristics. The optimisation is relative to an objective function defined on a cube covering the volume of interest. Due to the early stage of the project, a simple case-study is presented in the end as an illustration of the potential. An integrated methodology for well optimisation using this approach is under study.
