Abstract
3D geological models are essential to understand and quantify subsurface processes. Robust model updating is then needed to incrementally add subsurface features in geomodels and to account for new observations. A difficult challenge during model updating is to provide geometric accuracy about geological features while preserving mesh quality criteria which are imposed for the numerical resolution of partial differential equations (PDE’s) governing subsurface processes.
This project aims at developing a robust computer library to introduce discontinuities such as fractures and unconformities into tetrahedral models representing the subsurface, and to locally adapt mesh density to the desired modeling resolution.
