Controlled simplification and remeshing of structural models.
in: Proc. 31st Gocad Meeting, Nancy
Abstract
In this paper we propose a method to remesh 3D structural models with triangles as equilateral as possible. An existing Voronoi based remeshing framework is adapted to recover the topology of non-manifold surfaces and their boundaries. The input of the procedure is a set of triangulated surfaces representing geological interfaces (faults, horizons, detachments, etc). The positions of a given number of points are globally optimized to obtain an isotropic sampling of the surface. Then additional points are computed to recover non-manifold edges and nodes during a topological control step. This ensures that output and input models are homeomorphic. We show how information on the topology and the geometry gathered during the remesh process can be used for coherent simplifications of a model.
The method is demonstrated on complex structural models and clears the path for generating several models with varying resolution while controlling the degree of topological simplification.
