Conformal hybrid meshing of structural models
in: Proc. 32nd Gocad Meeting
Abstract
We propose a method to generate a hybrid volumetric mesh conformal to a remesh of the surfaces constituting a 3D structural model. Conformal means that the triangles of the remeshed surfaces are a subset of the facets of the volumetric elements. This method is well-suited to mesh stratigraphic models that have locally complex geometries such as thin layers, low-angle contacts, and pinchouts. These geological peculiarities are handled by generating prismatic elements between close surfaces. The input of the method is a set of triangulated surfaces that defines a valid boundary representation of the volume of interest and the output is an hybrid tetrahedron/prism/pyramid mesh. The two key points of the method are to use Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation to sample the model with a given number of points, and to account for combinatorial considerations to faithfully recover each volumetric region of the initial model.
