Coupling of kinematic restoration and forward geomechanical modelling for paleo-stress calculation in sedimentary basin models

Abstract

The definition of the present-day stress field is a key factor in the assessment of seals integrity for the evaluation of CO2 storage capacity. Recent developments implemented in KINE3D-3 kinematic restoration workflow for sedimentary basins permit to roughly estimate the stress field and the rock deformation at each geological event by taking into account past geometries, rock rheology and the far-field tectonic stresses. However, the stress field calculated at each geological event does not consider the stress calculated at the previous event. The work presented in this paper combines kinematic restoration, classic basin modelling and forward geomechanical modelling in an innovative workflow which permits to remove this limitation and to enhance the calculation of the paleo stresses by considering the stress field evolution through geological events and accounting for sediment compaction and pore pressure field.
