Constraining the tectonostratigraphic fingerprint of lateral slab tearing in pro-foreland basins using stratigraphic forward models

Abstract

A major architectural change in pro-foreland basins (hereafter referred to as foreland basins) is the transition from underfilled (flysch)- to overfilled (molasse) deposition, suggesting changes in the mechanism(s) controlling accommodation space and/or sediment supply. Slab breakoff has been suggested to potentially induce this change. Previous 2D quantitative assessments coupling geodynamic models of slab breakoff with stratigraphic forward models have shown that slab breakoff may induce a combination of 1) uplift of the basin floor and 2) a spike in sediment supply from the adjacent uplifted orogen (Eskens et al., in prep). Together, these processes can drive the change from underfilled- (flysch) to overfilled (molasse) conditions in the foreland basin.
