Abstract
Whereas progresses in seismic acquisition and processing greatly reduce structural interpretation ambiguities, uncertainties often remain in fault relay and branching zones due to diffraction and limited seismic resolution. Such ambiguities may lead to interpret en-echelon fault segments as a single major fault. From a dynamic point of view, it is important to distinguish these two interpretations as the relay ramps between separated fault segments may be fluid flow pathways between two fault blocks. In this paper, we propose a stochastic approach to downscale a normal fault generated by linkage into several segments. The downscaling algorithm can be subdivided in three main steps. The first step consists in identifying the segments from planarity and displacement criteria. Then the overlapping segments are modelled. During the last step, the simulated relay ramps can be breached on the basis either of linkage criteria, or of probabilistic approaches. We show that this stochastic process generates fault systems with different geometries impacting the connectivity between fault blocks.
