Abstract

Simulating channelized complexes is a major aspect in geomodeling considering their importance as hydrocarbon reservoirs as much as water reservoirs. However, some of their characteristics make this a difficult task. This is especially the case of the channel high continuity that is arduous to preserve while ensuring data conditioning. We propose to rely on a formal grammar system, the Lindenmayer system or L-system, to stochastically generate channel centerlines. A L-system puts together segments based on user-defined rules and parameters, such as the segment length or the angle between two consecutive segments. The use of proper rules together with stochastic parameters generate curves representing straight to highly meandering channels. Those curves can be constrained by the use of vectors that attract the axis toward the data directly during their generation. It ensures an easy conditioning to hard or soft data. L-systems appear to be highly flexible in the generation of various axis shapes. Preliminary results show that the method manages to simultaneously honor conditioning data and preserve at best the channel variations defined by the parameters. The combination of L-systems with channel envelope generation methods allow to easily obtain conditioned simulation of channels.
