Abstract

Driven by the needs from multiple target domains, geometric modeling approaches are moving from time consuming detailed modeling, to rapid modeling approaches, which capture the essence of modelers intent and trade details with a shortened modeling time. Geomodeling is one of the branches, where a satisfactory solution for rapid modeling is still under development. We present and compare two different approaches for performing rapid 3D geological modeling. The ad-hoc approach is based on a composition of many specialized modeling functions, while the generic approach provides one flexible, generic modeling function. Our experiences after developing these two approaches are discussed and compared against each other. The solution space of 3D rapid geological modeling is extensive and both specialized as well as general modeling approaches can provide a satisfactory solution for a given problem. Ad-hoc modeling metaphors allow for very fast modeling with a limited applicability and flexibility. The generic modeling method requires longer times for the geometry specification, but allows for wider flexibility and can be used combined with measurements, if available.
