Abstract

Carbonate rocks are highly heterogeneous and complex as they are induced from superimposed biological, chemical and physical processes. Few studies have been dedicated to the characterization of their petrophysical heterogeneity at meso-scale, i.e. outcrop scale. In this paper, we propose to combine petrophysics, geophysics and geostatistics at outcrop scales to characterize and understand the impact of carbonate heterogeneities onto petrophysical property spatial distribution. To achieve this, three decameter-scale outcrops have been chosen as case studies. For each outcrop, the three following operations have been performed: geophysical and petrophysical measurements at decacentimeter scales; mapping of facies and geological structures; statistical and geostatistical analyses of the measured petrophysical and geophysical properties. By comparing the petrophysical spatial variability to the heterogeneity organization through predefined descriptors, relationships between geological and petrophysical heterogeneities are discussed on the three presented case studies.
