Abstract

Fault displacement has a key role in seismology, hydrology, mining and is linked to stress release and fluid flow. However, when building a faulted model, horizon points are interpolated separately on each side of the faults. This may lead to inconsistent fault displacements when data are sparse or noisy, or when the fault extent is inappropriate. In this preliminary paper, we propose a method to visualize and analyze fault displacement prior to structural model building. The method aims at reducing modeling time by resolving fault displacement problems prior to structural modeling. It computes fault displacement directly from input horizon and fault point sets. We suggest two projections to create cutoff points: orthogonal to fault projection and parallel to horizon projection. These cutoff points could be used to display cutoff profiles, throw profiles or displacement graphs.
