A Jupyter notebook to test different reservoir upscaling approaches

in: 2021 RING Meeting, ASGA

Abstract

We propose an open source Jupyter notebook implementing different reservoir upscaling methods interfaced in Python. The aim of this notebook is to progressively include many upscaling methods operating on different grid types (Cartesian and corner point grids at present and unstructured grids in the future). The first implemented methods are single phase ones including averaging and flow-based methods. Each implemented technique is reviewed and tested using a single phase flow solver to compare fine scale and coarse scale results. The resulting notebook is very handy to use and a promising tool to allow research towards new upscaling methods and to transfer information between subsurface reservoir models at varying structure and resolution.
