Local and sequential fracture insertion in 2D structural models

Abstract
Local Geomodel updating is important in subsurface studies to avoid the cost of a complete model rebuilding when new information becomes available, or when an interpretation changes. To support such updating, this article presents a workflow to insert a fracture into an existing triangular 2D mesh already conforming to some geological boundaries. This work uses the MMG2D library to insert a bounded implicit line into the mesh which maintaining conformity to the other interfaces. Fractures defined explicitly by points are first converted to a scalar field. As fractures do not necessarily terminate against pre-existing boundaries, the fracture insertion is restricted to a mesh subset computed from the fracture size. The zone to be re-meshed is defined by several rows of triangles around the fracture to preserve the mesh quality during the insertion. Several geometrical configurations of fracture insertion in a mesh are presented and show the robustness of the proposed fracturing operator.
