Quadrangular adaptative meshing for wave simulation in homogenised media
in: 2021 RING Meeting, ASGA
Abstract
Geological structures are often difficult to mesh due to their complex geometry and abrupt changes in physical property. The meshes that honour such structures usually hold extremely small elements which dramatically increase the computation cost of numerical simulations based on an explicit time-scheme. In seismic wave propagation, the homogenisation method enables us to overcome this problem by computing an equivalent smooth model of the geological structures. To fully benefit from homogenized models, we here study meshing method which adapts the size of the elements to the (smooth) S-wave velocity. The method is based on a quadtree; it produces quadrangular meshes suitable for Spectral Element Method (SEM) in a 2-dimensional medium. To measure the impact of our adaptative meshing strategy, we compare SEM simulations in both a fine regular mesh and an adaptive mesh.
