Abstract
The Upper unit of Burgan Third Sand member is the uppermost unit in the Burgan formation which is the principal producing horizon in Super Giant Burgan field of Kuwait. It is a Lower Cretaceous transgressive sequence set mainly composed of sandstone fluvially dominated deposits. Traditionally the reservoir characterization of this Third Sand Upper has been done on grid based methods. In this present study, an attempt has been made to integrate core data, well data and seismic data to understand the geometry and spatial distribution of the different fluvial to marginal-marine facies. Knowledge visualization methodology has been utilized. This technique allows the transfer of knowledge acquired from analogue fields and facies relationships. The insights obtained from these are then used to populate the geological model using combination of object and pixel based methods of GoCAD software. These have been simulated hierarchically to create a geologically plausible model. Facies derived from well logs and core are expressed in terms of real generic objects as seen in outcrops in analogous fields constrained by geobodies extracted from seismic data. The model is then initialized to cover prominent geological aspects with Boolean objects. Rest of the geological objects is simulated with pixel based algorithm to decipher the entire geology in a realistic way. An attempt has been made to understand the tidal influenced marginal marine to fluvial dominated continental deposits of this heterogeneous reservoir. The resulting model can be used as a powerful tool for future development strategy in terms of drilling infill wells, optimization of secondary recovery schemes and understanding the reservoir behaviour.
