Abstract
Gocad software is widely recognized as a valuable tool for 3D modeling, especially in the context of 3D geological studies. Nevertheless, Gocad, like other 3D modeling software, uses a file-based method for the storage of data and does not support database for efficient/fast querying of 3D models. Some attempts have been made to extend Gocad with true 3D-GIS capabilities and Geo-DBMS (Apel 2001 and Breunig, 1999). In this paper, we will present the development of a generic and open system architecture called Web Geological Feature Server (WGFS) that provides direct access through Web services to 3D geological models. WGFS is based on a three-tier architecture: a client (Gocad), an application server (Apache Tomcat and Deegree) and a DBMS (MySQL). This architecture takes advantage of standard-compliant spatial applications such as WFS and GML standards stemming from OGC and spatial schema from ISO TC/211-Geographic Information.
