Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to present a method for stochastic inversion of acoustic impedance that can account for secondary data set. Several approaches have been proposed for acoustic impedance 3D modeling. Among them, sequential trace-by-trace simulation methods (first introduced by Haas and Dubrule) enables to generate simulations that fit both seismic and well hard data. This approach is based on sequential simulation of vertical acoustic impedance profiles (and then seismic traces) in a whole grid by using 1D simulation technique constrained by the given 3D variogram and the hard well data. Even if the rough skeleton of this approach is sequential (then “direct”), the choice of the “best” acoustic impedance (AI) profile that fit the seismic data is iteratively performed. Convergence problems then may occur. During the 2001 Gocad-meeting, a novel trace-by-trace simulation approach has been proposed to speed up the convergence of the simulator so that an acoustic impedance random field honoring well and seismic data can be obtained in a more reasonnable amount of time. However, several seismic attributes or other measured property may be correlated to the acoustic impedance and should be taken into account. After reminding the method objectives and outlines, the integration of secondary data types will be described. Applications on synthetic data set will finally illustrate the results of these new tools.
