Abstract

To parametrize a 3D volume, it is necessary to define a mapping from the normal (x,y,z) space, called the modeling space, to a (u,v,w) parametric space. These properties have to meet various mathematical criterions, so that they truly correspond to a parametrization ([Mugerin 1999], [Cognot 2001]). But it is also extremely important from the user’s point of view to obtain a good solution in a minimum amount of time. Indeed this is critical for two main reasons. One is to reduce the total amount of time spend on a crucial, yet transitory step towards building Stratigraphic Grids. The second is that getting a solution quickly also enables the user to change his mind and test other options, whereas it might not be convenient otherwise. This paper focuses on a new implementation of the D.S.I method ([Mallet 1992]), especially tailored for the interpolation of such a 3D parametrizer. For obvious reasons, it is important to interpolate the u, v and w parameters at the same time, since they may be linked by dynamic cross constraints (see [Cognot 2001]). Also, multigrid techniques should help a lot, provided all the constraints are properly handled at all resolution
