Abstract
The implementa.tion of raytracing in GOCAD i8 based on a modular concept. Our velocity model follows t.he geological structures. Wé have spatial regions in which parameters as velo city and density vary continuously, where parameters are discontinuous, geological interfaces are Întrodllced in the model. This means that the geological lTIodel consists in several spatial regions, bounded by closed surfaces. The raytracing concept follows exactly the definition of the geological mode!. Different methods for tracing rays inside such spatial regions may be defined. The global part, such as transformations from one region ta another, is done by general methods, which i8 shared by aIl the local tracing methods, 80 that new methods for tracing rays may be incorporated easily.
