Abstract
Over the last two decades, a significant research effort has concentrated on accurate modeling
of stratigraphic layers and of the associated petrophysical properties. Stratigraphic grids and Geochronological
Space (Geochron) both aim at finding a consistent way of describing heterogeneities
by implicitly of explicitly defining a curvilinear coordinate system conform to the sedimentary
layers. However, significant differences exist between these two models, both from the theoretical
and the practical standpoints. In this paper, we discuss intuitively these differences with regard to
geological realism and dynamic flow modeling. In particular, we show that Geochron generalizes
over stratigraphic grids, opening the door to new and more accurate ways of modeling stratigraphic
formations.
